The lifting operations industry is evolving, and so are the expectations on technical personnel. Increasingly, technicians across multiple disciplines need to undertake basic rigging responsibilities as part of their routine work. In response to this demand, we have developed a brand-new course – Lifting Equipment Users (LEU): Lifting for Technicians.
This innovative training programme has been carefully designed to address gaps identified in existing training profiles, ensuring the workforce is equipped with the right skills to meet today’s operational challenges.
We are also introducing a more immersive, work-simulated approach to training, giving participants the opportunity to learn in environments closely reflecting real-world conditions. By simulating the daily tasks and challenges, the learning experience becomes more engaging, practical and effective.
Course overview
Duration
Three days
Who should attend
This course is designed for a range of technical personnel including those working in mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, process and instrumentation roles, familiar with lifting equipment and may need to undertake simple lifting operations as part of their maintenance or operational duties.
Aims of the course
Delegates will gain the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to safely carry out category 1/simple rigging operations.
Upon successful completion, participants will be competent to perform simple/cat 1 lifts involving a single item of portable lifting equipment with a standard rigging arrangement, unsupervised, provided a lift plan is in place, and they are complying with dutyholders’ guidelines and procedures.
In addition, successful delegates may be recommended to assist with basic elements of more complex rigging tasks under supervision, subject to their employer’s competency framework.
What will be covered?
Day 1 – theory
Roles and responsibilities of lifting personnel, legislation, key terminology, and planning principles for rigging operations.
Days 2 and 3 – practical training
Hands-on rigging using equipment and accessories for basic lifting tasks, including slinging techniques.
Assessment
A practical ongoing evaluation and theoretical evaluation on day three ensures all delegates meet the required standard.
Certification and refreshers
On successful completion, participants will receive the Altrad Sparrows LEU – Lifting for Technicians certificate along with a personal tracker logbook to record ongoing experience.
- Initial certification validity: Two years
- Refresher certification: One day refresher course, extending validity to three years (when the logbook is properly maintained). If not, the refresher interval remains at two years.
This approach ensures that certified personnel not only meet competency requirements at the time of training but also demonstrate continuous learning and application in their roles.
More to come…
The launch of the LEU – Lifting for Technicians course is just the beginning. We are actively developing further work-simulated training programmes to meet evolving industry needs and address skill shortages in the market.
Stay tuned – there is much more on the horizon.
