Dave Buckham’s Journey: There’s No Wrong Path After School

As students across Scotland receive their exam results, many will find themselves at a crossroads: university, college, an apprenticeship, a gap year, or something entirely different. It can feel overwhelming.

So, we’re sharing the story of Dave Buckham's career journey, a great reminder that there’s no single “right” path—just the one that’s right for you.

From Mintlaw Academy to Mechanical apprentice

Dave grew up in rural Aberdeenshire, attending Mintlaw Academy. He always had a knack for the technical side — metalwork, physics, and maths were his favourite subjects at school. Weekends were spent under the bonnet of a car, playing football, and golf, or heading off on road trips with friends. He was hands-on, curious, and always building or fixing something.

But when exam results rolled around, he wasn’t sure what to do next.

“I stayed on into sixth year because I knew I wanted a technical job,” Dave says, “but I didn’t yet know which one.”

Like many school leavers, Dave cast a wide net, applying for everything from assistant pro golfer to hairdresser to painter and decorator. Eventually, he landed an apprenticeship as a mechanic with Sparrows in Aberdeen. That decision changed everything.

Why an apprenticeship?

With an unconditional offer for college in hand, Dave faced a big decision: stay in education or jump straight into the working world.

“I was just fed up with school,” he says. “I wanted to get stuck in.” He swapped textbooks for tools and never looked back.

Changing course

Five years into his career, Dave worked offshore as a qualified mechanic and machinist. While the experience sharpened his technical skills, the lifestyle wasn’t for him:

Instead of staying in a role that didn’t fit, he spoke up. That honesty opened new doors, first in a health and safety role onshore, then into the engineering department.

His advice? “If you ever feel your job doesn’t feel right for you, say something. Change is always possible.”

Today: Regional operations director

Fast forward 36 years and 13 different roles later, Dave is now Regional Operations Director at Sparrows. His journey has been defined not just by skill, but by his adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to say “yes” to new challenges.

“Without being dropped into the deep end now and then, I’d never have grown.” he reflects.

He credits his progress to strong mentors, supportive teams, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Dave’s advice for students on results day

“Please remember your results don’t define you. Before you open that envelope or text message, be ready with your options—university, college, a trade, a gap year. Think long term but remember: your first choice doesn’t have to be your forever choice.

“Once you know your results, talk to people. One conversation can open a door you never knew was there.”

There’s no wrong route—Just your own

Dave’s story is proof that there’s no fixed formula for success after school. Whether your future is in overalls or lecture halls, on job sites or travel adventures, what matters most is that you keep moving forward.

Stay curious. Be brave enough to change direction. And trust that your path will unfold—step by step.
