Using a rental ECR20 crane for the replacement of UM150 crane with EC65 was the safest and most effective solution.
Benefits
- Quick installation and dismantling of rental crane
- Swift response to fit in with tight timescales
- Cost effective solution compared to crane barge hire
- Complete crane replacement solution carried out by a single contractor.
Challenge
Dubai Petroleum Establishment (DPE) were looking to replace their 28-year old UM150 crane on the Fateh LQ2 (FLQ2) platform. Space constraints on the platform to perform the disassembly of the existing crane and back loading onto ship were challenging.
Due to our extensive experience in carrying out crane replacements, DPE requested Altrad Sparrows submitted a bid for the work. The work was to be completed over a two-month period at the FLQ2 platform, located 60 miles offshore Dubai.
Solution
- Due to limited space available on board the FLQ2 platform, and owing to the weight of the individual components of the crane to be dismantled and backloaded on the ship, Altrad Sparrows suggested that a temporary ECR20 crane be used
- Rental cranes are quick to install and dismantle and more cost-effective than contracting a crane barge
- Altrad Sparrows deployed experienced crane replacement crew
- The components of the temporary ECR20 crane were lifted to deck by the existing UM150 crane and then assembled on the deck of FLQ2
- The UM150 crane was decommissioned and stripped down to elementary components which were removed by the temporary ECR20 crane
- Pedestal modifications were carried out to allow the attachment of the new EC65 crane
- Components of the EC65 crane were lifted to deck by the ECR20 crane
- Installation, commissioning, funtion test and load tests of the EC65 crane carried out successfully
- Using the new EC65 crane the temporary ECR20 crane was dismantled and back loaded onto the ship for return to Altrad Sparrows base.
