Challenge

As a long standing specialist service provider to our customer with extensive prior involvement with their drilling rig, Altrad Sparrows was contracted to carry out the asset’s five yearly Special Periodical Survey (SPS).

The semi-sub has three different crane types, all of which required extensive workscopes. This included intrusive inspections and upgrades to a Miko pipe handling bridge crane in addition to complex SPS and upgrade work on two pedestal cranes of a different design and generation - a mature Brattvaag KHO 3516/1050 crane and a modern Liebherr 2600/75D crane.

Our project team successfully completed the workscopes under challenging weather conditions at the Keppel Verolme BV shipyard in Rotterdam.

Solution

  • We project managed a turnkey package covering all elements for the customer’s specific workscopes during their scheduled stay at the shipyard
  • Onshore engineering support was provided to manage planning, preparation, support, progress and final close out of the project with minimal disruption to the planned 200+ SIMOPS tasks
  • We mobilised the implementation team and equipment at the scheduled shipyard docking, with all supporting documentation supplied
  • All three cranes underwent five year SPS inspections, crane condition evaluations, hydraulic component changeouts, as well as general maintenance, upgrade work and load testing
  • The Brattvaag and Liebherr cranes received additional a-frame sheaves and shaft changeouts, along with boom component changeouts.
